First Danajon Reef summit set
CEBU CITY, Philippines — In its aim to facilitate active discussion among key stakeholders of the Danajon Double Barrier Reef, the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF) is set to host a three-day summit to gather strong support for its protection.
The Danajon Bank or Double Barrier Reef, located off northern Bohol Island, is the only double barrier reef in the Philippines. The reef is spread across almost 130 kilometers and consists of three large reefs.
CCEF, a recognized leader in coastal resource management, through the collaborative effort and generous support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), will host the event at this city’s Marco Polo Hotel. The Foundation seeks to gather 19 constituent municipalities, cities and provinces surrounding Danajon.
The Danajon bank’s overall area is 272 square kilometers with an aggregate coastline of 699 kilometers including 40 islands.
Among the local government units that has jurisdiction of Danajon are the provinces of Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, and Southern Leyte.
Meanwhile, organizers said the three-day summit also seeks to meet concerned government agencies and non-government organizations and academic institutions to discuss important matters pertinent to Danajon.
During the event, which will take place on January 18 to 2, environmental scientists and researchers will share their inputs with regard to the conservation and protection of the protected area.
