Please give until it hurts
MANILA, Philippines — To those that hath... It seemed the wrath of a divorcee when Elin Nordegren knocked down her $12-million mansion. (It didn’t meet hurricane safety codes and was termite-infested).
She also invited a local Habitat for Humanity chapter to take whatever it could before knocking down the mansion. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, $100 million poorer by alimony, licks his wounds in $50-million bachelor’s pad.
TO THOSE THAT HATH NOT… Please do not succumb to donor fatigue as CdO and Iligan try to rise from Phoenix ashes. (Wrong metaphor).
Donors, big and small, pour their hearts out for Sendong victims. Europe responded with $8.6 million (and still counting) in cash and kind, including $1.8 million from Spain and a separate $3.9 million from the European Union.
Japan, still cleaning up the post-tsunami and nuclear disaster, sent R14 million in emergency assistance, with promise of more help for rehabilitation.
Taiwan, our closest neighbor which upgrades PAGASA equipment (because we export our typhoons to Taipei via Batanes) sent $150,000. It's Tzu Chi foundation distributed on site rice donated by Taiwan Agri.
Ateneo students predictably responded to its president Fr. José Ramon Villarin, SJ (former president of Xavier U), and have so far raised R3 million.
Xavier U gave a one-hectare property and joined hands with Gawad Kalinga to relocate Sendong victims.
EVEN THE SMALLEST COUNT. The South Bay children turned over R15,000 they raised from Christmas caroling in the village.
Manny Baldemor, who lost to “Ondoy” everything on the ground floor of his Antipolo home, donated works…including some pieces “with ‘interaction’ with nature’s wrath.”
We all respond to our brothers’ need. This isn’t charity…but to give them a fighting chance, after they bury their dead, to get on with life.
TYPHOON MENTALITY? But the Cassadra cry seems unheeded. Senator Loren Legarda, champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation, again calls on the government to aim for a disaster-resilient nation with more preparedness.
“El hombre apercibido medio combatido.” (A man who has prepared well has half-won the battle – Don Quixote).
This Year of the Water Dragon promises much abundant water. Look into the state of health of Angat dam.
HI TECH. PNP to launch "e-warrant" database. If a criminal is arrested on e-warrant, does that make him a virtual prisoner?
SECURITY. DFA discounted the latest advisory issued by the US embassy against travel to the Philippines. But President P-Noy, erring on the side of caution, warned against terrorists disturbing the Black Nazarene procession. Mercifully, the worst fears didn’t materialize when millions joined this year’s calvary procession which was dedicated to Sendong Victims.
CINEMA. Philippine tourism gets a boost from the filming of “Bourne Legacy” in Manila. MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino may have to perform a small miracle to accelerate traffic for a credible car racing chase. Or will it all be cinema tricks and virtual reality? FEEDBACK: jaz_aide@yahoo.com
