MANILA, Philippines — Unheralded Juan Enrico Jugo upended third seed Enrico Luis Ong, 6-3, 6-2, to crash into the quarterfinal round of the 12-under boys singles even as fancied Arthur Pantino and Jacob Martin breezed through in the 23rd Andrada Cup Group I tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center Tuesday.
Jugo seized control early and sustained his form to stun Ong and complete a straight-set victory for a clash with the fifth-ranked Marraphael Teng, who scored an emphatic 6-0, 6-0 rout of Jerome Ignacio in the week-long tournament kicking off the Philippine Tennis Association’s series of junior tournaments for the year.
The top seeded Pantino and No. 2 Martin also came away with a pair of one-sided victories to reach the Last 8 with the former whitewashing Maverick Legaspi, 6-0, 6-0, and the latter overwhelming Pete Coteron, 6-1, 6-0, in the event backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.
Pantino seeks a spot in the semis against No. 8 Gabrielle Tiamson, who pummeled Jaremiah Co, 6-0, 6-2, while Martin tangles with No. 6 Manuel Balce III, who scrambled past a stubborn Joshua Austria, 5-7, 6-3, 10-6.
Other seeds who made it through in the division were No. 7 Norman Gaspar, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Alexander Bulilan, and No. 4 Michael Francis Eala, who made short work of Philip Joseph Gadon, 6-0, 6-1.
In girls' 18-under singles, Macy Gonzales toppled Rachelle de Guzman, 6-2, 6-2, and Marinel Rudas won via default over Monivic Santos to arrange a showdown with No. 1 Marian Jade Capadocia and No. 2 Samantha Coyuito, who drew byes, respectively.
