MANILA, Philippines — It's Christmas time and the bright decors are up everywhere. Red and green have always been the classic Christmas colors.

Red and green are also vital to comics.

Countless heroes and villains have donned the color, often at opposing sides of the war between good and evil. It’s nice to know that in the spirit of Christmas, enemies are learning to love each other and work together -- or at the very least, not rip each other’s throats out. Hulking out

First, we have Bruce Banner, popularly known as the Incredible Hulk. His green skin is the toughest in town, but inside, he is a big softy. In Fear Itself, Hulk was transformed into Nul: Breaker of Worlds.

But even though he was possessed by his mystical hammer, he still managed to warn his lover, Betty Ross, now known as Red She-Hulk, to escape before he could hurt her. When the mindcontrolled Hulk battled Dracula

and his army, the vampires used hypnosis, forcing Banner to think of Betty and eventually break free of the power controlling him.

Even now that Banner and the Hulk are two separate beings, at conflict with one another, both personalities still have a lot of heart, and they both continue to prove that they are heroes who save lives, even at the risk of sacrificing their own wellbeing.

At the opposite end of the Hulkverse, we have Red Hulk. General Thunderbolt Ross was part of a Super Soldier Program created by the supervillain think tank, the Intelligencia. Led by MODOK, the villains intended Ross to be an agent of the Intelligencia, their answer to the Hulk. But, being the noble, honorable military man that he is, Red Hulk fought back against their influence.

Right now, Red Hulk is a proud Avenger. During Fear Itself, he faced off with the possessed Thing, who was in the form of Angir: Breaker of Souls. The violent clash rocked the world, as Ross gave every ounce of effort to put down the A-Level threat.

The Marvel Universe is being overloaded with Hulks. With Hulk, She-Hulk, Red Hulk, and Red She-Hulk leading the way for the other Hulk-related characters, there is sure to be a lot of gamma-filled chaos and destruction in the near future for Earth-616. Just be glad the Hulks are on our side. Ring-slingin’ In DC, green and red are taking over as well.

There is the famous Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, who is having some trouble finding his identity in a universe that doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. To save the DC Universe, Hal had to kill Krona, a Guardian who turned evil and has had a long history of constantly threatening all of reality.

The Guardians were so scared of what Hal did, calling him the most dangerous Green Lantern. They ended up discharging him from the GL Corps.

Back on Earth, Hal got a job under Carol Ferris, his on-and-off love interest, but not as a pilot. For an adventurous guy like Hal, this was tremendously depressing. His relationship with Carol worsened when he got into a fight with her after he failed to live up to her romantic expectations (did she really think he was going to propose to her?!).

And to top it all off, Hal’s sworn enemy, Sinestro, was made a Green Lantern again, and the pointy-eared alien is not afraid to rub it in his former student’s face.

While times are getting harder for the debonair bachelor, Red Lantern Atrocitus is embarking on a new direction in his life. Atrocitus was among the handful of survivors during the Manhunter massacre of Space Sector 666.

He watched as his wife and daughter were murdered by the Manhunters, and he took out his anger on the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps. For years he waged war on Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner and the rest of the crew.

But recently, after performing a blood ritual with the innards of Krona, Atrocitus had an epiphany, realizing all the evil things happening around the universe. His visions pushed him to turn his army into a force of good, one that will punish the guilty. The task will not be an easy one, even with the powers that the red ring grants its wielder. Atrocitus has been noticing that his power and hold over his minions is decreasing. It’s only a matter of time before his soldiers turn on him.

Working both as good reads, and as colorful decorations for Christmas, be sure to add Hulk, Red Hulk, Green Lantern, and Red Lanterns to your shopping list. You can get them as presents or just as personal reading material for the Christmas break. You won’t go wrong with Red and Green this season.
