Upsets rock Pacquiao billiards tilt

MANILA, Philippines — Former two-time national open champion Lee Van Corteza survived in a day of upsets in the Manny Pacquiao International 10-Ball Championships Friday at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City.

Corteza downed Jech Limen, 9-6, to remain in the winner’s bracket along with Jeff De Luna, Jundel Mazon and Antonio Lining.

De Luna squeaked past Jericho Bañares, 9-7; Mazon edged Judy Villanueva, 9-7; and Lining defeated Alex Lumpay, 9-6.

Favored cue artists Carlo Biado, Ramil Gallego, Ricky Zerna, Ronato Alcano and Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann, meanwhile, absorbed shocking setbacks in the $60,000 tournament.

Reigning national open champion Biado yielded to Ricky Puro, 5-9; Gallego bowed to snooker ace Benjie Guevarra, 7-9; and newly-crowned Sun Star 9-ball titlist Zerna stumbled to Jeffrey Diaz, 7-9. Hohmann lost to Manolo Tanasa, 7-9, while Alcano absorbed a 5-9 defeat over Edgie Germonio in the loser’s side.

World No.1 Dennis Orcollo, likewise, survived the day in the loser’s bracket with a 9-5 triumph over Elmer Hay and Edwin ‘D Duck, 9-6.
