MANILA, Philippines - Gwendoline Ramos Ruais was honored by the Muntinlupa City Council for her first runner-up finish in the Miss World beauty pageant.

Gwendoline was cited after being crowned first runner-up in the beauty contest held in London last Nov. 6.

The 21-year-old beauty titlist was the main guest at the lighting of the giant Christmas tree at the Muntinlupa City hall. She was accompanied by her parents and siblings at the event.

The audience cheered as Ruais, escorted by Councilor Alexander Diaz, made her way to the stage. She was welcomed by Mayor Aldrin San Pedro, Vice Mayor Artemio Simundac, city councilors and officials.

During the ceremony, Mayor San Pedro and the City Council also presented Ruais with a resolution commending her win in the Miss World pageant.

City Resolution 11-129, sponsored by the mayor, vice mayor and city councilors, cited Ruais’ triumph in the Miss World pageant held last Nov. 6 in London.

The resolution, read by Councilor Raul Corro, said Ruais’ win “brought honor and prestige, and a sense of pride to Muntinlupenos.”

It said it was the second time that the Philippines won the first runner-up honor since Evangeline Pascual won as first runner-up in the pageant in 1973.

In the 2011 Miss World pageant, Miss Venezuela Ivian Sarcos won the title, followed by Ruais and Miss Puerto Rico Amanda Vilanova.

Mayor San Pedro said Ruais is a pride not only of Muntinlupa but also the whole country.

In her speech, Ruais thanked Muntinlupa residents for supporting her during the pageant, adding that she is proud to be a resident of the city.

“It’s just an honor to be from here. Mabuhay ang Muntinlupa,” said Ruais.

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony ushered in the Yuletide season in Muntinlupa. The Muntinlupa City hall is festooned with thousands of lights and decorations under the theme “Alice in Wonderland.”
