Probe of OFW's case sought
MANILA, Philippines -- An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was found dead in her rented apartment in Doha, Qatar with a rope tied around her neck, a Filipino migrants watchdog belatedly reported on Sunday.
Noel Tolentino, secretary general of the Samahan ng mga Migranteng Mangagagawa sa Qatar (SAMMAQA), a Migrante local chapter in Doha, identified the OFW as Edilyn Buno Mirasol, 28, from Tagum, Davao City.
She was deployed last year to work as a secretary and accountant for a local contracting company in Doha. A fellow OFW and flat-mate found Mirasol's lifeless body on September 4.
Tolentino said that a week after the death of Mirasol, the OFW who reported the incident to the police and three other Filipinos were investigated by the local police. “The four OFWs were invited by the security police in Mogalina, Doha for questioning that started from 6 pm of Sept. 10 and lasted until 1 am the following day,” Tolentino said.
They were later temporarily released aside from a male OFW co-worker who is still detained since, based on witnesses, he was the last person seen accompanying Mirasol.
The OFW who discovered the body of Mirasol told Migrante that they were beaten and manhandled by the local police during the investigation.
Migrante requested the Philippine Embassy in Doha to conduct its own investigation and establish the cause of death of Mirasol and the alleged beating and manhandling of OFWs being investigated.
As this developed, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said the two Filipino household service workers of a nephew of Libyan leader Moammar Khadafy who had just arrive from the country last Saturday afternoon will receive assistance from the government.
OWWA Administrator Carmelita Dimzon who personally welcomed the two household helpers of Khadafys’ nephew at the Ninoy Aguino International Airport at about 4:20 of Saturd0ay said that the two OFWs will receive P10,000 cash incentives and other forms of assistance such as free psycho-social counseling and medical examination.
Dimzon together with Labor Attache for Libya Nasserr Mustafa and other OWWA officials upon arrival of the two OFW’s brought them immediately to their home office in Pasay City where their respective families were waiting for their arrival.
She also said the two OFW’s, Diana Jill Rivera,30, from Dumaguete City and Mary Ann Ducos Almario,29, of San Agustin Isabela shed tears upon their arrival at the NAIA especially when they saw their families waiting for them.
The OWWA chief said the families of the two OFWs were excited for their arrival and expressed their happiness by saying that the favorite food of Rivera and Ducos will be cooked for them.
Dimzon said the mother of Rivera cooked “pinakbet” which is her daughter’s favorite dish.
She also said that Mustafa reported to Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, the two other OFWs which were left under the custody of the Khadafy clan, Raquel Collantes and Zenaida Labuyuen, also expressed their desire to be back home.
Reports showed that Mustafa led the rescue operation that safely brought the 2 OFWs out of their employer’s house in Tripoli last September 19.
The OWWA chief said that the government team in Libya is preparing to rescue the two remaining Filipina workers still under the custody of the Khadafy clan. (Jean Fernando)
