LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Philippines (PNA) — Two inmates escaped at dawn Monday by sawing off the lock of their cell at the Provincial Jail here by means of a crude instrument.

However, one of the escapees, Marlon Moreno who is facing a case of theft, surrendered to jail guards who pursued him in his hometown of Mangatarem.

The other escapee, Rannie Bonifacio of Barangay Baybay Pulong in Binmaley, who is facing a case of murder, has not been accounted for.

This was the fourth escape of inmates of the Provincial Jail since January this year. This was also Moreno’s second escape.

The provincial government is now investigating who among the jail personnel could be made responsible and charged for the latest jail escape.

Initial investigation showed the escape of the two happened at 12:30 a.m. Monday when most of the inmates were already sleeping.

Jail authorities were puzzled why Moreno had already tried to escape twice though he only faces a light offense of theft.

Records showed that in previous three escapes of inmates, at least 17 jail personnel, including Assistant Jail Warden Rogelio Paglingayen, were already charged administratively for infidelity in the custody of inmates. (PNA)
