U2 and Prince: Rockin’ the concert circuit

LOS ANGELES, California -- It’s not the easiest feat to do, but if it is to be done, then U2 is just about the perfect rock group to do it.
As reported on Rolling Stone on April 8, U2 is on the brink of having its U2 360 World Tour become the highest-grossing tour in history. Surpassing the massive take home revenues of Rolling Stones’ 2005-2007 A Bigger Bang Tour, U2’s second show in the 360 World Tour alone will put their earnings past the $558 million mark.
The magazine predicts that by the time they wrap up their next North American leg in July this year, they would have made about $700 million in total. The U2 360 Tour features a unique staging that reportedly allows stadiums to increase seating capacity by 15% at least—which is a great help in setting such a record.
The band’s 360 World Tour is in support of their latest album, “No Line on the Horizon,” which the magazine notes as “an album that underperformed at retail and spawned no major hits.”
While U2 is toiling across North America at this time, Prince—who during the period of 1993 to 2000 inexplicably decided to simply be known with an unpronounceable symbol—has announced a much-awaited 21-show residency, which was originally reported that he would all do in the Forum in Los Angeles beginning April 14.
Meanwhile, in the April 7 episode of “Lopez Tonight” hosted by George Lopez, Prince did a phone interview for the announcement. Lopez began the interview with the multi-awarded singer by first asking to him to prove who he was, saying, “Tell me something only Prince would know.”
To this, Prince replied, “You mean besides the fact that I’m your Puerto Rican brother for another mother?"
He noted in the interview that he would be doing the residency with his band The New Power Generation with “the whole gang and special guests.”
Prince also promised to come on “Lopez Tonight” on April 13. “Just let us bring the purple,” he drawled. “I’ll blast the roof off that place, I promise,” he said in parting, drawing cheers from the audience.
A later release from Prince’s camp said that not all his planned 21 shows in Los Angeles shows would necessarily be at the Forum. Further information and ticket details are still forthcoming as of this writing.
Prince’s previous tours were called 20Ten, in support of his latest album with the same title, which ended in November 2010; and Welcome 2 America, which began in December 2010 and ran up to March 2011.
