Pinoy music has a fighting chance this year – Ogie
MANILA, Philippines -- Piracy and international acts sent Pinoy music to years of comatose.
But not this year.
The revived Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) is making sure local music returns to fighting form in the coming months.
“We have a lot of campaigns that Filipinos must watch out for. Our goal is to regain OPM’s consciousness at its core and we’re all doing pro-active work to achieve our goals,” said OPM president Ogie.
To meet the needs of the organization, its officers enlisted help from PAGCOR, which supports OPM in conducting seminars for songwriting and launching the “Search for the Ultimate OPM Performer.” There’s also the OPM-Click project wherein each congressman may sponsor a music teacher in each municipality.
Maestro Ryan Cayabyab developed the syllabus for the music instructors.
The new OPM is also about paying it forward. On April 14, from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum, members are volunteering to perform for the “BaliKaBayani” concert spearheaded by the EDSA People Power Commission (EPPC).
For the benefit of OFWs, the concert features Ogie, Gary Valenciano, Noel Cabangon, Christian Bautista, The Company, Spongecola, 6Cyclemind, AEGIS, Salamin, Jim Paredes, Buboy Garovillo, Mae Paner, Dingdong Avanzado, Mark Bautista, Duncan Ramos, Faith Cuneta, Ryan Cayabyab Singers, Jamie Rivera and Lea Salonga.
“We all know the hardships our OFWs go through, leaving their families behind, which is a huge sacrifice. And sharing our talents is our simple way of helping them. This is the right time to once again show our ‘bayanihan’ spirit for OFWs particularly those from Libya who returned home because of the escalating war there,” Ogie said.
Alcasid said there’s a renewed confidence among OPM officers and members to make a move.
‘If we don’t take advantage of the renewed confidence of the people, we will never get it back. And this applies not only to music but to other fields as well,” he said.
