RP seals Davis Cup win

Fil-Americans Cecil Mamiit and Treat Huey surrendered only six games in securing the Philippines' victory over Pakistan on Saturday in the Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie at the Philippine Columbian Association
(PCA) indoor courts.
After sweeping the singles Friday, Mamiit and Huey teamed up to hack out a one-sided 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 win over Aqeel Khan and Jibran Muhammadi, reducing today's reverse singles as exhibition matches.
RP non-playing team captain Chris Cuarto did not take chances and fielded the country's top two singles player in lieu of Patrick John Tierro and Francis Casey Alcantara.
In Friday's singles, Mamiit beat Jalil Khan, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, while Huey downed Aqeel Khan, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
The RP squad now awaits the winner between New Zealand and Indonesia whom it will face in the final round in September.
The Kiwis are currently leading, 2-0.
"It's a great feeling playing and winning for the country. The crowd is very supportive. It's a great honor," Mamiit said.
The Filipinos have now beaten Pakistan four times in five meetings.
Despite playing doubles only for the second time, Mamiit and Huey had the RP seals Davis Cup win match in firm control as the Pakistanis lapsed into errors.
The Filipinos rolled over the visitors in the final set and had three match points before the Pakistanis roared back to life, forcing deuce.
Mamiit volleyed a winner to reach match point and whipped a forehand return to end the match.
"Kumpiyansa ako sa team na ito. We'll definitely try to work hard again for the coming tie as soon as possible," said Cuarto.
The meaningless reverse singles matches, now reduced to three sets, start at 3 p.m. on July 12.
