Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Charge d' Affaires Manuel Perez Iturbe was injured when the car he was driving plowed a line of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's (MMDA) pink fence before turning turtle at Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), in Mantrade, Makati City past midnight Tuesday.

Responding traffic personnel could not help but wonder as to how Perez, who was driving a midnight blue BMW-3020i (1000) and owned by the Venezuelan Embassy, only suffered minor cuts on his arms when in fact his car "seemed like to have been crushed like a tin can" after he slammed against the MMDA fence.

Not only did the Venezuelan diplomat was able to escape a tragic death, Makati City Traffic Enforcement Unit (MTEU) case officer Senior Police Officer 2 Michael Descalzo, said. He also managed to call a taxi cab on his way home before authorities arrived in the area.

"Mga galos lang sa braso ang tinamo nung Venezuelan Diplomat sa aksidente kaya nga nakakabilib na yun lang ang nangyari sa kanya gayung yuping-yupi yung kotse. Nakatawag na siya ng taxi para ihatid siya sa bahay nila sa isang subdivision sa Ayala bago pa kami dumating," he said.

Descalzo said that the accident happened on EDSA's southbound section near Magallanes Bridge, at around 12:45 am Tuesday. Asked what caused the early morning accident, Descalzo said that they have yet to get the statement of Perez, who immediately fled from the area.

But Edmundo Benoza, driver of Perez, said that his boss figured in a major traffic accident after he supposedly tried to evade being hit by a speeding car behind him.

Benoza went to the scene of the accident to look after the car’s wreckage.

Descalzo said that there is a slim chance that the dignitary will face suit despite the damages that the accident caused and for fleeing from the incident before authorities was able to conduct their investigation due to Perez' "diplomatic immunity."

"We are still waiting for Perez' statement, pero mukhang may immunity naman sila sa mga charges. So ang mangyayari nito ay for record purposes lang ang ginagawa namin," he said.
