120 Filipinos participate in virtual summit on opportunities for higher education in the US

By Roy Mabasa  Amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, more than 120 Filipino students and working professionals participated in the recently concluded 2nd annual EducationUSA Media Summit virtual edition spearheaded by the United States embassy in Manila. (US EMBASSY IN THE PHILIPPINES WEBSITE / MANILA BULLETIN) Speakers from renowned institutions like the New York Film Academy (NYFA) and the University of Southern California (USC) took the virtual centerstage on May 14, 2020 and discussed with prospective Filipino applicants the college application strategies and communication and media program options offered by top-tier U.S. universities online and in-person. In his opening remarks, US embassy cultural affairs officer Matthew Keener stressed the embassy’s commitment to enhance the educational ties between the two countries, saying, “It is one of our top priorities, and we’re here and ready to help you work toward that goal, even during (the) quarantine.” “I am so glad to be able to continue to engage with you, and work with you, and help you all hopefully realize your dream of one day pursuing your academic goals at your dream university in the United States,” Keener told the participants. Emmy-award winning journalist and NYFA Broadcast Journalism School chairman Bill Einreinhofer talked about the increasingly important role of digital communications and how NYFA graduates have been behind some of the most powerful stories driving media coverage during this pandemic. USC International admissions officer Alex Alvendia-Wienkers, for his part, expounded on how USC programs prepare students for academic and professional development opportunities. EducationUSA is the US government’s official source of information on US higher education. It provides free advising services to prospective international students in more than 170 countries, and offers student resources and tools to navigate the Five Steps to U.S. Study: researching schools, identifying financing, completing the application, obtaining a student visa, and preparing for departure.
