PN to deploy logistic support vessel in China-ASEAN military exercises

Robert Empedrad said the service command is expected to deploy one of its two Bacolod City-class logistic support vessels in relation to the joint military exercise to be held in Zhanjiang, China, from October 22 to 29, 2018. (Photo courtesy of edisonsy via Flickr / MANILA BULLETIN) In an interview, Empedrad said BRP Bacolod City (LC-550) or its sister-ship, BRP Dagupan City (LC-551), may be deployed in the naval exercise to be participated not only by the Philippines but also other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states and the People's Republic of China. "Isang cargo ship na available ang ipapadala natin. 550 ata o 551 (One of our cargo ships that is available will be sent. 550 or 551)," Empedrad said. Empedrad said he was invited to grace the exercise but is still not sure if he could attend it due to another activity. He said part of the exercise could deal with manuevers, inter-operability exercises, and HADR or Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations. Earlier, Department of National Defense (DND) Public Affairs chief Arsenio Andolong, said the holding of the joint ASEAN and Chinese exercise came about following the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Retreat in Singapore from February 5 to 6, 2018.
