Church leader supports jeepney drivers' cooperatives

Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, acting president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, has expressed support to Caritas Manila’s initiative to set up cooperatives to aid jeepney drivers who were affected by the lockdown.

“It is important to prioritize the livelihood of the different sectors such as the jeepney drivers who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Caritas Manila’s move to set up cooperatives for them will help the jeepney drivers get by at this time of crisis,” David said over Radio Veritas.

Caritas Manila, the social action arm of the Manila archdiocese, recently partnered with Caritas Caloocan to provide aid to more than 300 jeepney drivers in Caloocan, Navotas, and Malabon who lost their livelihood during the lockdown.

Bishop David also expressed support to the plan of Caritas Manila to provide assistance to the children of affected jeepney drivers in their schooling through the charity arm’s Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program  (YSLEP).

“Aside from the financial aid and food, the Church also provides livelihood assistance and help in ensuring that the children of those who lost their livelihood will continue with their education,” David said.

The Church leader urged the jeepney drivers to continue to pray for the pandemic to finally end which is the only way for the people’s lives to get back to normal. “You are not alone. The Church is with you. God is with you. We are all here for you,” David said.

Caritas Manila, meanwhile, also plans to provide food assistance to the more than 10,000 affected jeepney drivers plying the Manila area.
