Leni to visit OFWs in US, Canada to promote stories of hope, courage

By Raymund Antonio After her London trip, United States and Canada will be the next destination of Vice President Leni Robredo for her Istorya ng Pagasa project that features inspiring stories of overseas Filipino workers in the host countries. Vice President Leni Robredo spoke at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the United Kingdom on Saturday, April 7, 2018 (Manila time), in the event called Vice President Leni Robredo (Photo by OVP) Robredo announced during her weekly radio show, “BISErbisyong Leni,” that she will have an official visit to New York, U.S. and Vancouver, Canada to meet OFWs this year. “Ang dami nating listeners from Canada na mga Pilipino kaya sana po ma-message niyo sa amin iyong mga kwentong alam niyo para pag-punta na namin dyan…ay ma-interview din po namin kayo,” Robredo, a lawyer, said. (We have many Filipino listeners from Canada that’s why I hope you can message us the stories you know…so we can also interview them.) The Vice President is also scheduled to visit Hong Kong for a meeting with the Filipino community apart from the two countries. The highest-ranking woman in government has been going around the country as part of INP, her office’s initiative to promote extraordinary and inspiring stories of ordinary Filipinos amid adversity. She then launched the global search for stories of hope of overseas Filipinos, which kicked off last week in the United Kingdom capital. In her radio program, Robredo featured the success stories of Virginia Uri de Villa, an OFW who owns a beauty salon in Tottenham, North London, and makeup artist Grant Gannaban-O’neill. The recorded video of her meeting with the two OFWs was uploaded in Robredo’s Facebook page and garnered more than 21,000 views. While she was in London, Robredo also met with Nova Fossgard, who used to sell fish in the Philippines but now owns a language school in Purely, Croydon. The Vice President underscored the importance of highlighting the stories of OFWs from UK to inspire Filipinos here and abroad. “Maibahagi sa kanila iyong kwento kasi ito iyong magbibigay ng ano ba iyong klase ng buhay ng mga Pilipino dito at papaano nila nalampasan iyong mga pagsubok na dumaan sa kanila,” she said. (Sharing their stories will tell them the quality of life of Filipinos here and how they had overcome the trials they went through.
