In a media session at AsiaPOP Comicon 2018 on Friday, the actor who portrayed Kevin Tran expressed his desire to “get the Asian culture everywhere.”
“When I was a kid, one of the things that I remember wishing and hoping for I would grow up to be a white guy,” said Chau. “Because in the media that I consume, all the coolest characters and all the coolest heroes are white people.”
“And it took me so long to realize how messed up that was,” he admitted.
“I don’t want future generations of Asian-Americans or anyone anywhere that is under-represented to feel that way,” the actor stated.
“I want people to feel comfortable with their own skin, being themselves. And that’s what I really want to push forward in,” he added.
Chau then shared that he enjoys attending different conventions since he is able to witness people expressing themselves of who they would want to be.
“You could be anybody. And you can be happy, comfortable, and it could be a strength of yours. And that’s what everyone does,” said Chau.
