Timber-poacher gunned down in Surigao del Sur

By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY – The anti-illegal logging operation implemented by the task force of the Bislig City Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), along with the Army’s 75th Infantry Battalion (75th IB), went into high gear after a timber-poacher was gunned down during hot pursuit operations in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur province. (Photos courtesy of Bislig City DENR-CENRO/MANILA BULLETIN) The identity of the slain timer poacher was not immediately known, while the identity one of his cohorts, who was wounded when he tried to flee with the illegally-cut lumber, was being withheld pending further investigation that could lead to the possible arrest of the group’s financier. The wounded suspected timber poacher was taken by DENR personnel to a hospital for medical treatment while investigation was ongoing. DENR 13 Regional Executive Director Atty. Felix S. Alicer has commended the 75th IB troops for their continuous all-out support to the anti-timber poaching drive of the DENR, one of top priorities of Secretary Roy A.Cimatu. He also commended Bislig City CENR Officer Victor Sabornido for a job well-don in applying tight pressure on timber poaching activities. RED Alicer was likewise pleased by the compassion shown by CENRO Sabornido in taking the wounded suspect to a hospital for treatment. “Despite of their (timber poacher) bad deeds, our field personnel showed their humanitarian effort by immediately bringing the wounded to a hospital for medical treatment, “the region’s top DENR official added. Meanwhile, to give more teeth to the all-out anti-illegal logging drive of CENRO Sabornido in that southern-tip part in the region, along with the 75th IB and Police, Bislig City Mayor Florencio C. Garay issued Executive Order No. 11 Series of 2020 “Reconstitution of the Bislig City anti-illegal logging task force or Task Force Ail “As reactivated and strengthened under Executive Order No. 7, Series of 2020”.
