Cebu City, 5 other areas appeal for tighter lockdown

(OPS / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) In his Monday press briefing, Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said Cebu City, a highrisk area that is under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) until June 15, appealed to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to be escalated back to modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ). The following areas also appealed to be placed back under GCQ from the modified GCQ:
  1. Quezon Province
  2. Abra
  3. Apayao
  4. Caraga Region
  5. Lanao del Sur
Fourteen areas, however, appealed for the de-escalation of their quarantine classification. These are:
  1. Dagupan City
  2. Batanes
  3. Davao de Oro
  4. Davao del Norte
  5. Davao Oriental
  6. Davao Occidental
  7. Davao del Sur
  8. Pangasinan
  9. Angeles City
  10. Nueva Ecija
  11. Zambales
  12. Pampanga
  13. Cavite
  14. Cebu Province
Meanwhile, Roque said there was no appeal from Metro Manila officials. Over the weekend, Roque reiterated his belief that on Monday, Duterte will make the right decision for the people and the economy. “The right to life prevails. Kinakailangan pangalagaan ang kalusugan ng lahat. Pero nandiyan din yung karapatan na magkaroon ng hanapbuhay so kaya napipilitan tayo magbukas ng ating ekonomiya at 'yan nga po ang ginawa natin under GCQ (We need to protect everyone's health. But the right to make a living is also, that's why we were forced to reopen the economy under the GCQ),” he said. “The obligation of his administration to protect the public's health should be balanced with the right to make a living,” he added. Earlier, Roque agreed that Metro Manila and Cebu City were better off staying under the GCQ after June 15 because of the high number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in both high-risk areas.
