By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY – Five mild tectonic earthquakes jolted Surigao del Sur province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. However, the Surigao del Sur provincial disaster risk reduction and management council reported no damage or injury. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 2.2 magnitude tremor was recorded at 2:39 a.m. on Thursday (Dec. 6). The epicenter was plotted 39 kilometers (km) northeast of Lingig town, Surigao del Sur province. The tremor had a depth of 34 km. Earlier, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake was registered at 2:09 a.m. on the same day (Dec. 6). The epicenter was traced 54 km northeast of nearby Hinatuan town of that same province. The tremor had a depth of 11 km. At 12: 12 a.m. on the same day (Dec. 6), a 2.5 magnitude tremor was also recorded, the state agency said. The epicenter was located 16 km northwest of Cortes town of that same province, it said. The earthquake had a depth of 17 km. Earlier, at 10:19 p.m. on Wednesday, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake was also registered, its epicenter 16 km northeast of Cortes town and with a depth of 17 km, Phivolcs also said in its bulletin. At 9:09 p.m. on the same day (Dec. 5), a 4.6 magnitude tremor was recorded and its epicenter was located 22 km northeast also of that same town of Cortes, Surigao del Sur province, with a depth of 25 km. The five tremors that struck Surigao del Sur province were all tectonic in origin and no tsunami alert was raised by the state agency. Rescue teams and personnel of the municipal and provincial disaster risk reduction and management council were alerted following the series of mild earthquakes that struck Wednesday night and early morning of Thursday in different locations in the province.
