Lady Eagles finally end Lady Falcons' domination
Games on Sunday (The Arena, San Juan)
2 p.m. — FEU vs Ateneo
4 p.m. — SSC vs Adamson
Ateneo finally ended a two-year losing skid against Adamson University as the Lady Eagles came back from two sets down to essay a pulsating 18-25, 11-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-11 win over the Lady Falcons on Friday at the close of the elimination round in the sixth Shakey’s V League at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Eagles lost the first two sets, but not their composure which Bea Pascual showed in the fifth and final set as Ateneo halted its eight-game losing slide against Adamson, including its two losses in last year’s first conference finals.
Pascual only had nine points but her last two proved to be the daggers that pierced the hearts of the Lady Falcons as Ateneo broke its tie with Adamson in the standings.
With their 4-3 card, the Lady Eagles secured solo fourth spot in the quarterfinals, another single round robin affair which starts tomorrow.
With Ateneo holding a slim 11-12 lead in the deciding set, Pascual, getting an excellent set up from her teammates, launched two lightning quick kills that proved to be the start of the end for Adamson.
The Lady Falcons had the chance to counter in the next play, but Angela Benting’s wide kill sent Adamson to its fourth loss against three wins.
Guest player Charo Soriano, still recuperating from her shoulder injury, led Ateneo with 15 hits while Angeline Gevacio and Gretchen Ho made 12 apiece for the Eagles who put to naught Paulina Soraino’s season-high 22 points and conference-high nine blocks.
In the opening game, the Lyceum Lady Pirates salvaged some measure of pride by closing out their campaign with a 25-13, 25-14, 24-26, 25-18 victory over the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons.
