Far Eastern University hit two birds with one stone by handing Ateneo a pair of stunning defeats in both UAAP volleyball divisions to highlight yesterday’s four-game bill at the Mall of Asia Arena.
FEU’s men’s team ended the 30-game winning streak of defending champion Ateneo with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 triumph in the morning before its women’s counterpart rallied from a set down to prevail 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9.
Both wins enabled the two Tamaraws squads to gain early confidence as they look to improve from their Final Four appearances last season.
John Paul Bugaoan steered the Tamaraws with 13 points built on 10 kills and three blocks while Jude Garcia also stepped up with nine hits and two blocks to finish with 11 points.
FEU also took advantage of the absence of Josh Villanueva and Rex Intal due to graduation and reigning Finals Most Valuable Player Tony Koyfman, who was reportedly nursing an injury.
The Lady Tamaraws, on the other hand, scored eight straight points in the deciding fifth set on their way to dealing the fancied Lady Eagles a shock defeat.
Toni Rose Basas scored three consecutive aces to put FEU up 12-9 to finish with 14 points. Bernadeth Pons contributed the same amount of points and Celine Domingo added 10.
University of the Philippines gave Kenyan coach Godfrey Okumu a winning debut by downing University of the East, 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8, in the other women’s match.
