Duterte slams critics of gov't's COVID-19 measures: 'What have you done for the nation?'

By Genalyn Kabiling President Duterte hit back at critics of the government's efforts to address the coronavirus emergency, saying these attention-seekers do nothing but criticize. "Ano ang nagawa? Ito lang tanong ko: Dumaan na man kayo, ano ang nagawa ninyo para sa bayan? Iyan lang," he said in his public address aired late Thursday night. (What have you done? I ask you: You've been around. What have you done for the nation? That's it.) "Kapag sinabi ninyo ako wala, okay, wala. Eh kayo? (If you say I have done nothing, then fine. How about you?) What have you done for the country except to talk and criticize and talk?" he added. Duterte warned that there will be a "time for reckoning" for his critics who engage in politicking. He said he would name these detractors so people will avoid them in the next election period. "For the sake of the country, I will identify ‘yung mga Pilipino na walang ginawa kung hindi magbatikos, maghanap ng mali, para lang may masabi at marinig sila ng mga tao (the Filipinos who do nothing but criticize, find fault, just to have something to say and be heard by people)," he said. "Iyan ang iwasan ninyo. Iyan ‘yung naglalaro ng politika. At for so many years, ilang taon na sila nandiyan, puro posturing, porma." (Those are the ones you should avoid, those who are politicking. And for so many years, they've been there, doing nothing but posturing, making themselves look good.) Duterte also compared his critics to "snakes" who comment on almost all issues just to get publicity. "Sa Mindanao maraming ahas. Pero hindi ko alam na ang karamihang cobra lumipat na dito. Ayan, nakita mo nagdadaldal. Iyan ang mga cobra," he said. (In Mindanao there are many snakes. But I did not know most of the cobras moved here. There, you see them talking. Those are the cobras.) "Walang ginawa kung hindi maghintay magkagat just to open --- just to --- just to be able to open her or his mouth. Para sabihin alam lahat. Kasi may mga tao diyan na ano sa Kongreso, lahat, na maski anong topic, may masasabi talaga." (They do not nothing but take a bite, just to be able to open her or his mouth. Just to say they know everything. Because there are some people there in Congress who really do have something to say on any topic.) The President urged the people to listen to the government instead of his critics. "Huwag ho kayong makinig diyan. Dito kayo makinig sa gobyerno, tutal ako ang nagdadala," he said. (Do not listen to them. Listen to the government, besides I'm the one leading it.) The government has been criticized by some groups for its alleged slow and inefficient response in dealing with the pandemic and mitigating its impact on the people. The country’s cases of coronavirus have soared past the 5,000 mark despite recent enhanced community quarantine measures. Duterte previously gave the warning that the country might collapse early if people will listen only to the pronouncements of "idiots" and the “insane.” He made the comment after a stinging rebuke by critics who questioned his pronouncement about the limited funds for the coronavirus response. He explained that the government still has to raise revenues to fund the P300 billion authorized in the Bayanihan law to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
